What Is GEO? (Generative Engine Optimization Explained)

8 min read

Short answer

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a brand's presence so generative AI systems, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, surface and recommend it in their answers. It's the natural next step from SEO for the AI search era.

GEO: the umbrella concept

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of optimizing a brand's presence so that generative AI systems surface and recommend it. Where traditional search optimization was about ranking on a results page, GEO is about being the answer, or part of the answer, that an AI system gives when someone asks a question. This applies across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, the platforms where an increasing share of research and buying decisions now start.

In practice, GEO covers a few concrete areas: making sure a brand's information is accurate and consistent everywhere it appears online, structuring content so it's easy for AI systems to extract and cite, implementing schema markup and llms.txt files that make a site more machine-readable, and tracking how and where a brand actually shows up across these platforms over time.

GEO and AEO

GEO is sometimes also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), the terms are used somewhat interchangeably in the industry, though GEO is the broader and increasingly more common term. Where AEO tends to focus specifically on optimizing for direct question-and-answer formats, GEO covers the full range of ways a brand can be surfaced, cited, or recommended across generative AI systems, including answers, comparisons, and recommendations. For most businesses, the practical work involved is the same regardless of which term is used.

GEO vs SEO

GEO is best understood as the next evolution of SEO for the AI search era, not a replacement that invalidates everything that came before it. Many of the same fundamentals still matter: clear, well structured content, accurate information, and a credible presence across the web. What's changed is the destination. SEO was built around ranking in a list of links. GEO is built around being cited, quoted, or recommended directly inside an AI-generated answer, often without the reader ever clicking through to a traditional search results page.

That shift matters because fewer people are clicking through past the AI-generated answer at all. Brands that only optimize for traditional rankings risk becoming invisible in the growing share of searches that now happen through AI chat interfaces instead of a classic results page.

Why this matters now

As more buying research moves into AI platforms, the brands that show up inside those answers early are building the same kind of durable advantage that early search-optimized brands built over the last decade. A GEO program run alongside ChatGPT Ads covers both the paid and organic sides of that same shift.
